大きなことを成し遂げるため、強さがほしいと求めたが、謙虚であることを学ぶために弱さを授かった。

 

I asked for health, that I might do greater things.

I was given infirmity, that I might do better things...

 

偉大なことができるように健康を求めたが、さらに良きことができるように病気を賜った。

 

I asked for riches, that I might be happy. I was given poverty, that I might be wise.

 

幸せになるために富を求めたのに、賢明であるように、貧しさを授かった。

I was given weakness, that I might feel the need of God...

 

称賛を得ようとして成功を求めたのに、得意にならないように失敗を授かった。

人生を享受するためにあらゆるのものを求めたが、あらゆるものを享受するための人生を与えられた。
